The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) is pleased to announce the list of nominees for 17th National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) edition to be held on 17th February 2018 at Reps Theatre in Harare.

Adjudicators applauded the geographic spread of entries across all genres as well as quality of artworks despite limited resources. In some categories like Children’s Books, adjudicators noted some serious shortcomings in the editing, proofreading and general packaging of the books. In the three dimensional visual art work, adjudicators noted lack of creativity and originality in a number of entries. These grey areas notwithstanding, the high number of entries and sustained interest shows the confidence that our artists have placed in the annual NAMA awards. Adjudicators were quite impressed by the quality and standard of film entries this time around.

Some key observations by the adjudicators’ committee include, among others, the following:

  • Online submissions improved in the number and quality of entries.
  • A high number of literary works are self-publications; these have numerous errors and unforgiveable grammatical and technical mistakes, thus affecting ultimate products as well as exposing writers’ glaring editing shortcomings.
  • Most submissions of music videos lack imagination and creativity. Many artists do not invest in hiring producers as they prefer to produce and direct the filming of the video by themselves. This compromised the quality of the submitted film product.
  • Of note in the Dance sector is the absence of meaningful traditional dance entries. Most traditional dance practitioners are not creating new works that are evident of innovation and creativity.
  • There was an upsurge of music products in Zimbabwe with many artists producing singles and pushing the number of entries high. Not many seasoned artists produced new works in the year under review.
  • Some entries could not make it because they fall outside the NAMA year.

NACZ would like to thank artists, production houses, producers, media houses, promoters, creative stables, arts organizations and institutions and all those that submitted entries for the 17th Edition of NAMA for making the process a success. It is the participation of the artists and stakeholders that builds the NAMA brand.
